Based on our Kindergarten and School Readiness Tests, the Kindergarten Readiness Inventory (KRI) Parent Edition is intended for home use only.

The KRI Parent Edition was designed to be given in the comfort of your home. Plan to test at a desk or kitchen table so that your child has a comfortable surface to write on. Make sure you have the KRI Manual, Test Booklet and a crayon or pencil. Give your child the KRI Test Booklet and read the instructions to him/her from the KRI Manual. Once testing is complete, score your child’s test booklet with the scoring instructions in the KRI Manual.

The inventory allows parents to assess skill development in vocabulary, letter identification, visual discrimination, phonemic awareness, comprehension and interpretation, and mathematical knowledge. Here parents can see where their child falls in learning areas for beginning kindergarten.

Any parent, guardian, homeschool teacher or grandparent can administer the KRI.

The KRI provides Individual and Overall Readiness Ratings that assess student readiness levels as ‘A’, ‘B’, or ‘C’. Each of these ratings are accompanied by instructional implications, which explain the child’s readiness level and suggest strategies for improvement.

What will the KRI results tell me?

If your child scores an ‘A’, for overall readiness then he/she should be successful with kindergarten activities without additional practice of tested skills. If your child scores a ‘B’ for overall readiness then he/she would benefit from additional practice before kindergarten begins. If your child scores a ‘C’ for overall readiness then he/she would be helped by additional practice in most of the KRI test sections. Examine the individual readiness scores in each test area in order to determine where your child needs additional help.

Use the KRI individual readiness scores to determine test areas where your child would benefit from additional practice. For instance, if your child received a score of ‘B’ or ‘C’ for Vocabulary in Test 1, spend additional time reading to your child in order to expose him/her to a wide variety of words. Take the time to pause and explain unfamiliar words to your child as you read. Use the explanation of the readiness skills on page 3 of KRI Manual to develop activities to assist your child with mastering each test area.KRI results are for home use only, and are not meant to replace kindergarten readiness tests.
