The High School Placement Test (HSPT®) is the most comprehensive placement test available to assess 8th graders entering into high school and provides schools with reliable information and data needed to make important decisions for student admissions, placement, remediation, and scholarships.

The standardized battery of ability and achievement tests measures student performance in Verbal Skills, Quantitative Skills, Reading, Math, and Language. An optional test (Science or Catholic Religion) is also available at a school’s request. The annually reviewed norms are more selective than general population norms and ensure that students are measured against an up-to-date representative national sample of their peers.

The HSPT is available as the Closed version, the Open version, and the seventh grade edition Pre-HSPT.

Closed HSPT

With the Closed HSPT, a new form is developed annually to allow for the highest level of security and it is only available on a lease/score basis. With STS's lease/score program, schools pay for the scoring service and testing materials are provided for the schools to use at no cost1.

The Closed HSPT uses current norms and must be scored by STS’s Scoring Center or via E-Score. The return of all materials (both used and unused) after testing is required as testing materials remain the property of STS; schools do not pay for nor own these materials.

Open HSPT

The Open HSPT is an earlier edition of the of the Closed HSPT that allows high schools to purchase and keep/own testing materials. The Open HSPT must be hand-scored by the school using previous published norms or scored via E-Score.

Pre-HSPT

The Pre-HSPT is the 7th grade edition of the HSPT and is administered by and in high schools allowing schools to potentially increase their admissions prospects. Test format, administration options and requirements, and scoring services are identical to the Closed HSPT with the exception of availability of an optional test.

Format

The HSPT consists of five multiple-choice subtests and was designed to be taken in its entirety: Verbal Skills, Quantitative Skills, Reading, Mathematics, and Language. The Verbal Skills and Quantiative Skills subtests require the use of reasoning skills, thus categorized as Cognitive Skills subtests. The Reading, Mathematics, and Language subtests are designed to assess learned skills, thus categorized as Basic Skills subtests.

The test itself remains available in paper format only. Students will mark their answers on the separate paper answer sheet (or online answer sheet if using E-Score).

Administration

The HSPT is a school-administered test that must be proctored within the school. Each school is responsible for all details pertaining to administration including proctoring and review/approval of any testing accommodations.

While the majority of schools test individually, some test as part of a customized, coordinated HSPT program. A program consists of a cooperative of schools that have contracted with STS and test collectively, often under the direction of a diocesan education department. Features of a cooperative testing program may include things such as high school choice reporting, special summary reports, and customized materials and mailings.
